Birthday Celebration Concert

Heber Valley Railroad

So we were looking for a fun activity or extra present to get the kids for their birthday's this month and while looking around I found a few Piano Guys concerts.  While I was checking on the one that they recorded for a December PBS special that they shot up in Salt Lake on the 21st I found this benefit concert in Heber for the Heber creeper.  Kim and I love the scenery up there anyways and we knew the kids would love it since they already love watching The Piano Guys YouTube videos (especially this one)

We enjoyed the fall colors  on our drive up Provo Canyon and we would have taken some pictures had we not forgotten the camera.  It was a fairly small venue (a high school auditorium) and we ended up getting some pretty nice seats in the 8th row on the far right side (facing the stage-at this point I used my phone to snap some pictures but it decided it didn't like them and didn't store the image data).

They opened with  Love Story Meets Viva La Vida (which they haven't gotten the rights from Coldplay as far as I know, thus why it isn't on The Piano Guys' official YouTube list, but as they mentioned for a few other songs-live concerts are a legal gray area) and it was awesome.  It brought a great feeling into the room and William leaned over to Kim and said "I want to play cello."  What an awesome experience for just the FIRST song of the night.

Throughout the night the kids kept bouncing and swaying with the beat (as well as talking and playing with the other kids around us).  While by the end our kids were both pretty tired, we saw that both Jon Schmidt (THE piano guy) and Steven Sharp Nelson (the CELLO guy) were just in the hall talking to people so we figured we would go and buy something to get signed and take an awesome opportunity to meet some great musicians.

The CD cover we got signed

While standing in line, William was being fairly friendly (as usual) and this nice high school student didn't mind alllowing William's to analyze, test, pick and strum his cello.  It was fun to watch, especially as William was copying the student press down on the different strings to try and change the sound.

While we didn't talk very long with Jon, as William was being especially shy, he opened up a bit more to Steven  by shaking his hand and then saying, "he play cello."  Steven was impressed especially when we told him how interested the kids were in the music videos. When we expressed interest into eventually trying to teach William the cello, he even told us that 8 is a good time to start.  It was an awesome little chat.

Steven having fun talking to us, William especially
(Luckily my phone decided that it liked this one, and the cello one above)

On our way out we decided to get another Piano Guy signature (the one manning the merchandise table).  He signed next to his picture in the CD book (top right),  and he and William said bye bye until the doors shut behind us.  We then piled in an enjoyed our new CD on the drive home.  All in all, it was an awesome family night and we all enjoyed such great musical talent and kindness.

It it truly amazing how much good music can bring happiness into our lives.  One thing that they mentioned during the show is that their goal with these YouTube videos is to have music that grandparents, parents, and kids can all enjoy which not only was evident in the demographics of the concert tonight, but also in the fact that there are 3 generations of Roses (and probably several of our friends due to social media) that are hooked on their music.  It was an awesome night and hopefully we can have some little musicians in our home here in a few years.

Sounds like it was awesome! Don't you just love how much little kids respond to music. It is amazing!
